Nicaragua 2006

Fourteen members of ISMS team lived and worked for one week in Puerto Cabezas, which is located 560 kms northeast of Managua on the Atlantic Coast. During the trip some team members visited the local orphanage where they gave donated clothes, shoes, books, toys and art material to the kids.  While in Puerto a civil unrest brook between the government and the local rebels from the  Miskitu communities due to election irregularities. The rebels closed the airport and the highway connecting Puerto with Managua.  The team had to travel for hours over unpaved roads and cross the river in canoes with their luggage and equipment.  Eventually, the team members boarded three charted single engine planes that took them to Managua.

Number of cases: 122
Type of cases: The team performed routine general surgical cases such as hernia, head and neck tumors and gallbladder diseases. There were many cases of cleft lips as well as other congenital anomalies. There were two cases of sever burns one of which was a young girl who suffered from seizure disorders. She sustained sever burn to her back, breast, sides and arms when a seizure attack took place while she is building a fire.
