Sunday around 11am, the team is working hard to finish setting up the operating rooms and finish evaluating the never ending stream of patients reporting to the clinic. The word arrived that a 3 year old burn victim was in the ER. Drs. Kothuru and DeBellis rush to evaluate the child. The child suffered 70% burns to his body as a result of boiling pot of water falling on him. The child is in sever pain and his prognosis is grim.
Several things needed to be done immediately if the child has any chance of surviving. The child's airways had to be secured and his pain had to be controlled. Mike, Chris and Bob worked together in a fast and organized fashion. Within few minutes the child was sleep and on breathing machine. The second task was to establish proper intravenous access to allow for replacement of fluid and injection of antibiotics and other medications.
Both arms and the neck were severely burned, these are the typical sites to start intravenous access. Dr. Kothuru wasted no time. He immediately performed a cut-down in the groin and secured the access. Dr. DeBellis evaluated the burn area and applied appropriate antibiotics dressing to prevent infection. A tube was inserted in the child stomach to allow for feeding which would increase the chance of fighting any infection.
Within couple of days the child prognosis was upgraded from grim to excellent. The child was removed from life support measures successfully. We received an email recently indicating his rapid recovery. We are hoping he will be out of the hospital any time now.
